Before Al Jourgensen became one of the most menacing figures in industrial-metal history, he was a 24-year-old kid plying synth-pop sounds on Ministry’s 1983 debut With Sympathy. Fully absent of the thrash-gnarled riffs and junk-sick screams that fueled the band’s classic Psalm 69 era, With Sympathy instead brings buoyant drum machine beats and pop-squiggled keyboard melodies to the dancefloor. While the record was maligned by its creator for decades, Ministry’s misunderstood debut only gets better with age.
