Neneh Cherry - The Versions

After over 30 years since the release of Raw Like Sushi, Neneh Cherry remains an influencer of music and culture. To coincide with her winning 3 Icon Awards and promoting her autobiography, she has given fans the release of The Versions, containing collaborations of her classic hits by a stellar cast of female fans inspired by her work.

To promote the record, close friend and fellow Swede Robyn has covered Neneh's breakthrough single "Buffalo Stance", it features Mapei and was produced by Dev Hynes. Another Raw Like Sushi smash, "Manchild", gets a heartfelt but unadventurous cover from Sia and a more daring reimagining from LA-based art-popper Kelsey Lu, whose mournful version really shines a spotlight on Cherry’s strikingly prescient lyrics about male fragility. Equally effective is Anohni‘s late-night remake of "Woman", Cherry’s torch song about feminine power in a patriarchal world. Anther highlight is Chicago singer and poet Jamila Woods’ glistening neo-soul take on "Kootchi".
