Mustafa - When Smoke Rises

On his debut solo album When Smoke Rises, the Toronto artist formerly known as Mustafa the Poet confronts grief and dispossession over understated production with folk-music overtones. He was inspired by the music of Richie Havens, Joni Mitchell, and Leonard Cohen, as well as Sufjan Stevens. His folk-inflected music, tender and calm, serene and defiant, honour his Toronto Regent Park neighborhood with the softness so often absent in attitudes and policy towards poor people. The album features the singles "Stay Alive", "Air Forces", "Ali" and "The Hearse".
