Sam The Record Man is Canada's most famous music retailer, founded by Sam Sniderman in 1937. Known for his commitment to carrying every conceivable recording and hiring musicians and music enthusiasts, Sniderman cultivated a loyal customer base and helped shape the city's music scene.
His flagship store on Yonge Street opened in 1961, featuring two giant spinning records, which became a symbol of Toronto's music scene. The chain became the largest music retailer in the country at its peak, with 140 locations across Canada by the early 1980s.
