The album saw the Weeknd's sound shift from more R&B stylings to a pop-oriented vibe. His style remained experimental and notes that Michael Jackson was a huge influence in it's creation. The concepts of his isolation and romance manifested in a melancholic atmosphere that is undoubtedly pop-noir. It paved the way to Starboy and his rise to global superstardom. 

The album features guest appearances from Labrinth, Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey, with production handled by The Weeknd himself, Stephan Moccio, DaHeala, Illangelo, Ben Billions, DannyBoyStyles, Max Martin, and Ali Payami, among others.
