16 Lovers Lane, the band's sixth album from 1988, was noted by Record Collector as "almost universally acknowledged as The Go-Betweens' finest hour", and referred to by many as "the indie Rumours". The ten beautiful songs on this album are all love songs, and have been called a piece of "romantic artistry". Legendary music critic Robert Christgau called it "the straightest and catchiest bunch of love songs they've ever produced". Vocalist Robert Forster described the album as, "the perfect combination between London melancholy and Sydney sunshine".
